Research & Expertise

Over the past two years, I have primarily served as a clinician responsible for healthcare provision for refugees and undocumented migrants. In Malaysia, undocumented migrants and refugees are systematically excluded from universal health coverage, the right to legal employment, and children are denied the right to formal education. Like most countries in Southeast Asia, Malaysia has not acceded to the 1951 Refugee convention. Hence there are no legal safeguards to protect their fundamental human rights. Through my work on the frontlines of this healthcare and social crisis, I have developed insights into the various barriers and difficulties these migrants and refugees face, and have witnessed up close the lasting implications of non-inclusive policies. I have also developed the clarity and depth of understanding that policymaking is fundamental in effecting systemic change and extending equitable healthcare to migrants and refugees. My LLM's dissertation topic was on health coverage for undocumented migrants, and I hope to play a role in advancing and advocating for refugees/migrants right to health in the near future.
