Research & Expertise

The migration (and mobility) health conflict nexus especially at cross-border posts in East Africa and in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. We have also done work on internal displacement and its impact on gender roles transformation in the context of food security. Future interests in the migration and gender-based violence nexus. We have also developed concept notes on the migration and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) nexus especially in the context of South-South migration. This is because girls and women from FGM high prevalence countries are moving from countries like Somalia and Sudan (also with the most severe type of FGM-type three according to WHO) to countries like Uganda and Tanzania which have a low prevalence. These girls and women experience health and psychosocial effects of FGM. However, the capacity of the health care system to provide health and psychosocial services to these girls and women in Eastern Africa is weak. Anecdotal data shows that they are not even aware of the WHO guidelines for managing health complications of FGM. Makerere University also has interest in the humanitarian emergency and public health nexus particularly looking at the quality of care of maternal and child health services provided during humanitarian emergencies.
