Research & Expertise

Jo Vearey is an Associate Professor and Director of the African Centre for Migration & Society, Wits University, where she coordinates the Migration and Health Project Southern Africa (maHp), teaches, and supervises graduate students. Jo holds a PhD in Public Health; is a South African National Research Foundation (NRF) B-rated researcher; alumni of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS); and held the first Wellcome Trust Investigator Award outside of the UK and Ireland (2015 - 2020). Jo is former Vice-Chair & an active expert member of the global Migration, Health and Development Initiative Network (MHADRI), and Director of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centre of Excellence on Migration and Mobility. She is Co-Director of the National Institute for Health & Care Research (NIHR) Global Research Group on Disrupting the cycle of gendered violence & poor mental health among migrants in precarious situations (GEMMS) and Co-Lead of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) & The Guild Network of European Universities (The Guild) Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE) in Migration & Health. Her internationally recognised and globally-impactful research in the field of migration and health is informed by her commitment to social and epistemic justice.
