Research & Expertise

Dr Gemma Crawford is an early career-researcher with experience spanning health promotion and public health practice, advocacy, leadership, policy, teaching and research. An Associate Professor of Public Health and Health Promotion in the Curtin School of Population Health, Gemma holds roles as Director of Graduate Research and Deputy Director with the Collaboration for Evidence Research and Impact in Public Health (CERIPH). She employs qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to conduct applied, intervention-based, and participatory research and evaluation. Her research focuses on social, commercial and political determinants of wellbeing, particularly for populations underserved in health and social policy. She has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers, six book chapters, 20 technical reports and 100 abstracts for national and international conferences, secured more than 60 demand and investigator-driven grants, tenders or commissions and currently supervises 13 PhD students. Gemma’s novel contribution is as a public health generalist and knowledge broker, bringing together researchers and end-users to maximise impact and build capacity in groups traditionally lacking research power. She Coordinates a national Community of Practice for Action on HIV and Mobility (CoPAHM) and the Journey to Home migration, health and housing project, which is part of the Odyssey Migration and Mobility Public Health Research Hub.
